Cell providers boost over festive season

The country’s mobile phone service providers significantly boosted their network traffic over the festive season. MTN South Africa reported on Tuesday that SMS traffic jumped to 1.17 billion, a 49 percent improvement over last year. Voice traffic soared to 1.87 billion calls, up 46 percent over last year, endorsing MTN South Africa’s leadership position in the traditional voice market. MMS traffic grew 400 percent to 8.8 million over the 2006 festive season. Cell C reported over 35 million SMSes sent over the period.
