Cement sales in the Southern African Customs Union rose by 5.5 percent year on year last month, but were marginally lower than in October. The Cement and Concrete Institute yesterday revealed that 1.38 million tons of cement were sold last month in South Africa, Lesotho, Botswana, Namibia and Swaziland. This was 5.5 percent higher than the 1.31 million metric tons sold in November last year. Regional sales of cement have grown by 9.4 percent to reach 1.39 million tons in the first 11 months of this year, representing almost 11 percent sales growth on October last year. Major local producers have been pressured by a buoyant construction environment, with some forced to import cement to meet demand. Domestic steel sales rose 15 percent to 479 200 tons from a year earlier.
